Shuttered summer schools have many parents worried about “summer slide” the widely accepted theory that students forget information after prolonged periods away from school.
Twins Ariel, left, and Alexis Ortiz, 15, use educational apps to help in school and to stay sharp over the summer. Ariel loads apps on an iPod Touch. Alexis downloads computer apps. “I think it’s really helpful definitely,” Alexis says.
Maggie Ortiz, left, oversees twin daughters Ariel, center, and Alexis as the St. Francis High School students study with educational apps. “I have a lot of apps,” says Ariel, who uses an iPod Touch. Both girls regularly use Google Maps, refer to a dictionary app and check out locations on Google Earth. Ariel also uses a Spanish translator and recommends AppBox.
