Kirkwood Continues Winning Streak Predator 9-Ball Tour / Parsippany, NJ by Jerry Tarantola The Predator 9-Ball Tour, presented by Tony Robles and Predator Cues, made its fifth stop of the season in Parsippany, NJ. Held April 12-13, this event drew 64 players, with Jason “The Dark Horse” Kirkwood continuing his winning streak by making a crash-landing at Comet Billiards. On a road trip from Grand Rapids, MI, Kirkwood has won the hearts of pool fans in the Northeast with his incredible play and humble attitude over the past few weeks. Coming off a first-place finish on the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour the previous weekend, Kirkwood defeated Greg Hecht, Michael Yednak, Mike Wong, Eddie Abraham, Marc Vidal, and Bucky Souvanthong to earn the hot seat position. On Sunday Kirkwood rolled over Marc “Spain” Vidal in the first winners’-side match 9-2. Eddie Abraham defeated Joey Kong 9-5 then Ron Piontkowsi 9-7 in a gritty battle before being defeated by Tony Robles 9-7. Bucky Souvanthong continued his impressive play as he grinded out notable wins over Frankie Hernandez and Robles, who he bested 9-8 after trailing “The Silent Assassin” 5-8. ...

Atwell Takes Come-From-Behind Victory Pechauer All-American Tour / Portland, OR by Skip Maloney Down 5-1 early in the final match against hot seat occupant Dan Louie, Glen Atwell came back to win the final 6 games to capture the $1,500-added Pechauer All-American Tour stop in Portland, OR, at the Nite Hawk. The event drew 48 players the weekend of April 12-13. Louie easily captured the hot seat by defeating Damien Rebman 9-3, while Atwell started the tournament’s final day on the one-loss side of the bracket with a 9-0 shut-out victory over Jeff Heath. He went on to best Jessie Allred 9-7 and then deposited Bob Zack into a fifth-place tie with a 9-6 win. Now in full stride, Atwell advanced to the quarterfinals and played a close match with Allan Hanson, winning 9-7. In the semifinals Atwell took a 9-5 victory over Rebman. The final match was a close one at first, but when the score was knotted at 5 apiece, Louie took a 7-5 lead before Atwell settled in to capture the last 6 games for the victory. BCA Hall of Fame Names Hopkins and Fleming Pool Genius Versed in Many Games Voted Among Greatest Players; Statistician and Video Pioneer Recognized for Meritorious Service BROOMFIELD, Colo., April 14, 2008 — Allen Hopkins, a versatile player who won major championships in several cue disciplines, and Pat Fleming, the creator of a massive video archive documenting two generations of great pool players, will be inducted into the Billiard Congress of America’s Hall of Fame in a ceremony set for June 12 at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, N.C. Hopkins, 56, a two-time winner of the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship as well as major events in 10-ball, straight pool, and one-pocket, will be inducted into the Hall’s Greatest Players wing. Fleming, 59, owner of Accu-Stats Video Productions, will be enshrined in the Hall’s Meritorious Service wing. IPT Announces Reyes and Murphy as Contestants The International Pool Tour announces that living pool legend Efren Reyes will compete against rising star Austin Murphy on April 29th, 2008. The IPT Ultimate 8-Ball “Viewers Choice” challenge match called on pool and billiards fans world wide to pick the players for this next free live broadcast. The fans responded with a massive number of votes. Their voice determined that the match would put the teenager Austin Murphy in a position to prove himself as a professional against the game’s living legend Efren Reyes. Laha and Sinkhorn Take State Billiard Title Events by Tom Fryer Rick Beams and Chris Duncan hosted their first annual Kentucky State Championships in 9-ball and 8-ball at their Paradise Billiards Café in Bardstown, KY. This April 12-13 event was restricted to Kentucky residents—but no pros allowed. Played on 8-foot Gold Crowns, the tournament was well-received with 60 total entries, with Duke Laha and Donnie Sinkhorn winning their respective divisions. The 9-ball division saw a match-up of pre-tournament favorites in the winners’ semifinal. “New York Dave” Grau dropped a 7-0 bomb on David Rice to advance, while the other semi saw Duke Laha move on 7-3 over Gregg Pagulayan (the world-renowned Alex’s uncle). That defeat inspired Gregg as he then eliminated Rice and then knocked out 13-year-old straight-shooting future pro Landon Shuffett by a 7-4 count. The winners’-side final pitted Laha against Grau, and helped by two 9 balls on the break, Laha took the hot seat at 7-4 while Grau went left to play Pagulayan.
