9-Ball Champions Decided at BCA League EventBy Tom Martin, InsidePOOL Staff Dickie Renk of California went undefeated through the 145-player field at the BCA Pool League national championships to win the men’s division of the 9-ball event. His opponent in the finals was Canada resident Larry Wilson. Wilson, a former Canadian bar-box champion, had to give Renk two games on the wire in the race to 9, and the outcome of the match was indeed the span of the handicap, with Renk winning 9-7 (7-7). Wilson had a chance the final game, but a position error on the 7 led to the cue ball freezing on the 9. While Wilson was able to massé and hit the 7, Renk easily shot in the resultant 7-9 combo to take the title and the $3,000 first prize. Wilson picked up $1,800 for second.
In the women’s event, Rebecca Wagner defeated Lori Buendorf back-to-back sets in the true double-elimination finals. Buendorf, who won the BCA champion many years ago, is just getting back to the game after a long layoff and was unable to hold Wagner off. Wagner, who was on the receiving end of a two-game handicap, won the first set by the decisive score of 8-1 (6-1) despite some erratic play by both players. The second set proved to be more of a battle, but an over-cut 5 ball in the eighth game made the score 5-3 and put Wagner on the hill. Despite Buendorf taking the next game to close within 1, she could not capitalize in the final rack, and Wagner ran out the remaining balls to put the match away. Wagner’s win earned her $1,650, and Buendorf collected $900 for second place. Canadian Anita McMahon and Andrea Wilson filled out the third and fourth place spots, earning $500 and $315, respectively. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest from the BCA Pool League.
