Another Victory Notched in Holt's BeltBy Bill Rosenberger Lee Holt has already garnered attention as one of the top amateur players in the Northeast, but he solidified that fact at PJ's Billiards in Linden, NJ, April 2-3. While the Hampton Ridge Tour stop only drew 22 players, the field was still full of talent as the young Matt Krah joined Holt in the weekend event.
Gerard Soriano joined Holt in the winners' bracket, and the two of them dominated their first three matches on their way to meeting in the hot seat. With a 7-4 win, Holt advanced to the finals, while Soriano headed to the semifinals. Soriano's opponent was Dennis Spears, who was on a torrid winning streak. After falling in the first round, Spears went on a roll, winning six straight matches to reach the semifinals. But he may have just run out of gas against Soriano, as he bowed 7-4 to finish in third. No one could have guessed how exciting the final match would be between Soriano and Holt, as Soriano raced to a 5-1 lead. But Holt never quit, clawing back into the match one game at a time. Before Soriano knew it, Holt had tied it up at six before finishing off the match 9-6.
