"Rocket" Rodney Morris, who had played solidly during the entire tournament, suffered a surprising 11-8 defeat against Jones, who only minutes before had squeaked out a victory over 9-ball stalwart Ralf Souquet. Jones' performance in the tournament had seemed a little lackluster up until this point, but his victories over Morris and Souquet propelled him to an 11-7 win over Filipino legend Jose Parica and won him a spot at the final table. With 93 entrants—86 of whom actually showed up to play—the Big Apple 9-Ball Challenge paid out over $43,000 in prize money.
