Beattie Takes First CWPT Win by InsidePOOL Magazine

Beattie Takes First CWPT Win

Anne Beattie scooped up first place on the third Tour Tiger Classic 9-Ball handicap event on the Canadian Women's Pool Tour held on July 17-18, 2004.  The inaugural season of CWPT kicked off earlier this year, and has been drawing a field of regular players to its events.

With the owner of host room Petrina's Taps & Billiards adding $500 to the take, a total of 22 women eagerly participated, all vying for the cash and trophies.  Jeff Bell, Hallmark and Tiger Products, whose products were raffled off, sponsor the tour.  Winner Laura Glober took home a nice set of billiard tips won in the raffle.

Petrina's in Oshawa is one of the three venues that have a two-story billiard hall, including comfortable lounges, a big-screen TV, friendly staff, and awesome food.  They also offer a private billiard area upstairs.

After shutting out opponent Sherly Richmond, Cathy Leferniere challenged Angela Mears in the match to determine fourth place.  But Mears was on fire after 7-4 win over Dorthy Brown and defeated Lefernier 7-4 with superb strokes.

Arriving in the winners' side finals after defeating Angela Mears 6-5, Beattie was greeted by Tara Renalli, who was on top of her game.  The score was knotted at 4, and Renalli needed three more racks to stay on the "A" side.  However, a 9 ball break and some combo shots put Beattie, who was also playing strong, on the hill first.  Beattie finally let Renalli to the table, only for her to miss the 7 ball.  Beattie ran out the final two balls to make her victory score 7-4.

Mears then met her toughest opponent yet-Renalli. The semifinal match went hill-hill, with both ladies virtually running the table on their breaks.  Renalli won 7-6 by running out an easy six balls, forcing Mears to settle for third place.

With the final match's format being true double elimination, Renalli needed to defeat Beattie twice in order to take first place.  The first set saw each player making the 9 on the break.  Renalli ran out six balls, leaving the 7 for Beattie.  Missing the 7, Beattie allowed her challenger to take the lead.  With a 7-2 victory in the first set, Renalli needed one more match to beat Beattie.  Both played skillfully, but Beattie was on fire.  She quickly took a 9 ball break, some combo shots, and a good safety without letting Renalli to the table.  When Renalli finally was allowed to shoot, she made some unusual misses in the last game that led to Beattie sinking the 8 and 9 to win her first tour victory.

Results:

1st Anne Beattie $410

2nd Tara Renalli $200

3rd Angela Mears $70

4th Cathy Lefernier $70

5th Sheryl Richmond, Dorthy Brown
