Carolinas Open one-Pocket Division Winding DownBy Lee Griggs The Carolina’s Open, held this week at Fast Eddie’s of Goldsboro, NC, kicked off on August 18. Sponsored by Holiday Inn Express, Pastimes Billiards, on Cue Sports Bar, Alton’s Audio, Five 19 Club, Tar Heel Amusement, Mark & Eleanor Davis, Gene and Lucille Hooker, and Dr. Jay Collie, the tournament is composed of both a one-pocket and a 9-ball division, which will be held August 20-22.
A total of 56 contestants showed up for the one-pocket event, including “Earthquake” Keith McCready, Jeremy “Double J” Jones, Buddy Hall, and Scott “The Freezer” Frost. This turnout is nearly double last year’s numbers, making for an excellent turn-out for Fast Eddie’s and promoters Gene Hooker, Wendy Peaden, Billy Peaden, Dave Kindrock, and Frank Owens. The tournament director is Buxton Turner. Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich, who hails from New Jersey, met Steve Betts in an early match that went quickly with three down for the Kid. Craig Wolf, otherwise known as “Robo Cop,” from the Goldsboro Sheriff’s Department, made an excellent showing right up to the last of the evening. Many well-known shooters are on the list of contenders including Scott Frost, Buddy Hall, Jeremy Jones, Keith McCreedy, Dennis Hatch, Ray Martin, Tony Chohan, and others. Martin moved into the finals by the end of the evening and is scheduled to be first up Thursday against Danny Basavich. That will be an interesting match-up and unless “Kid” moves in quickly, “Cool Cat” could come out the winner. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
