Castro Comes out on Top in San Diego Victor Castro took advantage of being the house pro for College Billiards in San Diego, CA, to go through the third stop of the Ulrich & Associates Real Estate and Mortgage San Diego 9-Ball Tour undefeated to come out on top with first place and the accompanying prize of $600. College Billiards hosted a field of 40 players on April 17, and although the event was scheduled to last through April 18, the players managed to wrap the event up in a single day. This room is a true poolroom, offering a total of 22 tables, including four billiards tables and one snooker table. The room features fifteen 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables, as well as one 9-foot and one 7-foot Diamond table. To keep the focus solely on pool and billiards, no other attractions are offered aside from a full menu and lounge. There is ample seating for relaxing, socializing, and recouping. The room has just recently changed hands, and the new owners gladly hosted this event. At Saturday’s end, only four players remained. Victor Castro met and defeated Elias Valles for the hot seat, while Marshall Jung eliminated San Diego local Dan Wallace on the one-loss side. While Castro waited on the sidelines, Jung and Elias Valles, both from the Los Angeles area, battled back and forth with excellent shot making and strong safeties. It was Jung who came out ahead to face Castro in the finals. Many spectators had begun to crowd around to watch the two players face off in the final race to 9. Jung had made a few mistakes early in the match, which allowed Castro to gain the lead of a few games. As the match progressed, both players began to play stronger and more intensely, trading racks back and forth; however, it was Castro, with a few good rolls and his strong textbook-like precision play, who won the match by besting Jung with a score of 9-7.
