Chaperon Wins Showdown Over Thornley

By Craig Misener

Pool Paradise in Waterloo, ontario, held the third stop of the Showdown Tour, with Limestone Classic champion Bob Chaperon coming out on top.  The 56-player field competed on February 19-20 for a top prize of $2,200, but Chaperon wasn't the only tough player in attendance.

John Morra, Al Lougheed, and Paul Thornley were also in the brackets, and each was looking to make an impact on the field.  But Chaperon played well, earning wins over Aaron Thomas, Morra, and Andrew Attard, advancing him into Sunday's winners' bracket matches.

Thornley, Jody Matheson, and D.J. McGinley also headed into the second day with undefeated records, while Morra and Lougheed battled to stay in the tournament in their one-loss side match.  Lougheed came out on top of the hill-hill match, but he wouldn't stay for long, as he had to battle Thornley to stave off elimination.

Thornley was also a force to reckon with in the tournament, especially after he was upset by Matheson 9-7 early on Sunday.  once in the one-loss side, he ousted Lougheed and McGinley, both by scores of 7-5.

Over in the hot seat match, Chaperon faced Matheson for the first spot in the finals.  After Chaperon ran out to an 8-3 lead, an unfazed Matheson battled back with five straight wins to tie it up at 8 apiece.  In Game 17, he came up dry on the break, leaving Chaperon the opportunity to run out and take the 9-8 win.

In the semifinals, Thornley had a chance to avenge his only defeat that came at the hands of Matheson.  The control of the match was never in question, as Thornley shut out Matheson 7-0.

In the final race-to-11 match, Thornley jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but Chaperon stayed focused.  Not only did he battle back to tie up the match, but he ended up winning nine of the final eleven games to take home an 11-7 victory.

Results:

1st Bob Chaperon $2,200

2nd Paul Thornley $1,200

3rd Jody Matheson $700

4th D.J. McGinley $500

5th Al Lougheed, Mike Fisher $325

7th John Morra, John Timmerman $150
