Daulton Pulls Out Heavy Artillery to Take First

Cementing his place as one of the tour's points leaders, Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton took first place undefeated on the twelfth stop of the J. Pechauer Southeast Open Tour.  Jim Bob's Pool Hall in Gulfport, MS, was the place to be on August 14-15, 2004, where the likes of Sylver Ochoa, Tony Chohan, and Cliff Joyner came out to give a shot at taking top honors in the Mississippi Open.

The room is a pleasure and includes a pro shop with cue repair and a variety of food and drinks. The owners and staff showed all of the hospitality that the South is famous for.  In the usual tour fashion, a local non-profit charity received a donation, with the Special Olympics benefiting from the $60.

The heat was on Filipino world-beater Edwin Montal in the quarterfinals, where Chohan was on his heels the entire match.  With the score tied at the hill, Montal pulled out the stops to take the final rack to make sure he would move ahead, relegating "T-Rex" to fourth place.

After defeating Tommy Kennedy in a grueling match up, David Gutierrez found himself facing Daulton to fight for the hot seat.  The match with Kennedy must have taken it out of Gutierrez, as "The Cannon" shot out to finish the match with a 9-5 final decision.

Arriving in the one-loss side, Gutierrez gave Montal another run for his money in the match to determine third place.  The end of the match could have gone either way, but Montal missed out on taking the score hill-hill, and Gutierrez was quick to capitalize and won 9-7, setting up another chance to take on Daulton in the finals.

Each rack was vital in the final race to 11, with each player trying to make the most of their turns.  Gutierrez made a fine effort but could not get more than 8 on the board before Daulton blew by him for the 11-8 win.

Results:

1st Shannon Daulton $1200

2nd David Gutierrez $700

3rd Edwin Montal $460

4th Tony Chohan $350

5th Dave Broxson, Brian Jones $260

7th Jason Moran, Silver Ochoa $175

9th C.B.,Cliff Joyner, Luc Dupierne, Tommy Kennedy $80
