Derby City Classic by InsidePOOL Magazine

Some favorites in the banks event include Glen "Piggybanks" Rogers, Richie Richardson, Cliff Joyner, Nick Varner, Dee Atkins, Shawn Putnam, Jimmy Reid, and Shannon Daulton.  one surprise of the event includes Jose Parica being  upset by Eli Matthews in a late-night match the night before.  The format of the banks tournament is a single-elimination race to three sets, and each set is won by achieving five points.  The ball must be called and go in cleanly to count.  Past winners of the banks event are Nick Varner in 1999, Shannon Daulton in 2000, Jose Parica in 2001, and Larry Price in 2002.

The Derby City Classic is in its fifth year of existence and is thriving.  It is sponsored by Diamond Billiard Products, which supplied the 24 Diamond 9-foot Smart Tables for the tournament.  In addition to being able to watch some amazing pool, spectators are also tempted by the rows of vendors, including Viking Cues, Jerry Olivier Custom Cues, Lucasi Cues, and Joe Blackburn’s cue repair.
