Eglesias Captures Tri-State Title in New York

By Todd Fleitman

Tony Eglesias grabbed the title after making a run through the left side as the Tri-State Tour headed to Olympia Billiards, in Astoria, NY.   The "B" through "D" class handicapped 9-ball tournament took place on May 15, and was filled with players anxious to compete.

Neil Walmsley dominated the field en route to the hot seat, while Bruno Coto, after suffering a 7-4 loss to Walmsley, was awaiting his chance to compete for a spot in the finals.  Eglesias and Mike Wong, both with two wins and a loss, were plowing through the one-loss side before their meeting with each other.  In the ensuing match between the two shooters, Eglesias took a solid lead but Wong refused to concede by keeping the match close.  In the end, though, Eglesias prevailed to oust Wong and advance to the semifinals with the 6-4 win.

Eglesias proceeded to take an aggressive stance against Coto in the semifinals and the result was a 6-3 win for the eventual champion.  During the finals Walmsley appeared to be in complete control with a 6-3 lead, but he missed a crucial shot and the whole match turned around in favor of Eglesias.   Trailing 6-4, Eglesias capitalized on his opponent's mistake in the previous game to seize the momentum and take five straight games to win the title 9-6.

Results:

1st Tony Eglesias
2nd Neil Walmsley
3rd Bruno Coto
4th Mike Wong
