A large crowd gathered to watch the match between Corey Deuel and Jose Garcia, a room owner from New Jersey. Although Garcia's game is straight pool, he seems to do okay at 9-ball as well. Because both players were fairly local to the area, this match garnered the most attention of the four. Garcia ran the first two racks, but an uncharacteristic mistake early in the match led to his demise. Although the match was a close one at the end, Deuel's play was stronger, and the final score was 10-8 Deuel.
In the one-loss bracket, a speedy match between John Schmidt and Charlie Williams ended with "The Korean Dragon" squeaking by with a 10-8 victory, while Luc Salvas triumphed over Tony Robles 10-8. Robles and Schmidt collected $1,400 each for their seventh-place tie. In the matches to determine fifth place, Salvas met the temperamental Italian, Petroni, and Garcia and Williams matched up. Although Salvas's speed on the table is legendary, Williams was no slouch in this department either. Both of the matches seesawed, with no player gaining a large lead. In the end, Salvas eliminated Petroni 10-8, and Williams won his match 10-6. Garcia and Petroni earned $1,800 each for fifth place. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
