First Place is Feather in Aquino's Cap

by Tori Hilty

Tony_Vicari_Julio_Aquino.jpgArriving in first place at the Fury Florida Amateur 9-Ball Tour's stop at Cue Time Billiards was no walk in the park for Julio "Latin Connection" Aquino (pictured right), who made his way through the west side of the chart after his defeat by Bobby Moore earlier in the day. A field of 45 players ensured that the one-day event, held on August 29, 2004, would last well into the night, testing the players' endurance.

After moving through the one-loss side, employing consistent play to collect a 5-3 win over Steve Howitt and a 5-0 shut out over Eric David, Jim Sandalar met Aquino and had the tables turned on him.  Aquino grabbed control of the match from the start and shot out to win the match 5-1, leaving Sandalar in fourth place.

The hot seat match came down to Fury Tour regular Tony Vicari (pictured on left above) and Moore.  The match was Vicari as he jumped out to the lead, leaving Moore lagging behind.  Ultimately, things continued in Vicari's favor, allowing him the 7-4 win to claim the hot seat.  The win must have pleased Vicari, who usually comes out to play and have fun, because he was heard saying, "I can't believe I'm in the money."

Meeting for a rematch, Aquino and Moore faced off to determine who would advance to the final match and who would settle into third place.  Not too far into the match, the long day began to wear on Moore, who seemed to be played out.  Aquino commanded the match and orchestrated a 5-2 win to move onto Vicari in the final match.

The meeting of well-matched skill levels lengthened the final match between Aquino and Vicari, who kept it neck-and-neck.  At this point, the nailbiter could have gone to either player, but Aquino got a few good rolls and earned his first-place finish 9-8.

Results:

1st Julio Aquino $540

2nd Tony Vicari $350

3rd Bobby Moore $210

4th Jim Sandaler $110

5th Eric David, Brian Dixon $55

7th Steve Howitt, Robert Noon $40
