First Place Suits Ray on Fury Tours by InsidePOOL Magazine

First Place Suits Ray on Fury Tours

Tori Hilty

Robert Ray is racking up first-place wins on the Fury Tours, taking the top spot again on the Fury Carolina Amateur 9-Ball Tour as it made its most recent stop July 31-August 1, 2004 at Gametime/Riptide in Greenville, SC.  Ray added this win to his last Fury Carolina win two weeks ago and to his Fury Tidewater win the week before that.

The beautiful Gametime/Riptide is a complete entertainment complex, with 47,000 square feet of fun including not only thirteen 9 foot tables, but also a full bar and resturaunt, outdoor volleyball and badmittion courts, and video games galore.  Owner Jimmy Hodges is no stranger to hosting events for the Fury tour and plans to continue to do so in the future.

The event started roughly for Ray when Brian White, who took a 7-4 victory, sent him to the one-loss side in the third round.  Ray was forced to work his way through the one-loss side, but he was on a roll when he met John Thompson in the quarterfinals.  Ray took command of the match and had the 5-2 win without breaking a sweat.

While Ray was smoking through the west-side competition, Fury Florida tour regular Tim Daniel and Brian White were dueling for the hot seat.  The match stayed pretty tight, going back and forth until it was tied hill-hill.  White rallied himself to take the final rack and the hot seat with a 7-6 final decision.

Daniel went to face Ray in the match to determine third place.  Ray was up 4-2 when Daniel came back to knot it at the hill.  With the one-loss side racing to 5, Ray took the final rack to for the 5-4 win.

After powering through the brackets undefeated, White was stopped in his tracks by Ray in the final match.  Ray got out to a 3-0 lead before White got his first game.  Ray took two more racks to White's one, bringing the score 5-2.  After that, Ray strung three racks together to make it to the hill while White trailed at 2.  White claimed another rack as a result of a missed 5-9 combo by Ray.  With the score at 8-3, Ray scratched on a thin cut on the 1, but White botched his chance of staying in the game when he scratched on the 7, leaving his opponent three balls on the table.  Ray ran them out and took first place with a 9-3 victory.

Results:

1st Robert Ray $425
2nd Brian White $255
3rd Tim Daniel $160
4th John Thompson $100
5th Chip Compton, David Brown $50
7th Danny Turner, Bob King $40
