First Tournament Win for Barnett Julia Barnett took her first tournament win at The Whiskey Rack's Ladies Tour on August 28, 2004, besting the field of mixed handicap players who came out to The Whiskey Rack in North Saint Paul, MN. Among the ladies who came to play were the up-and-coming young players who placed in the top money spots as well as master players, who were knocked out in the early rounds.
Erin Walt, who was knocked to the one-loss side in the third round by Deb Nielson, met Marissa Herum in the match to determine fourth place. The 17-year-old Herum is diligently following in the footsteps of her mother, Jolene Herum, who is known as a terror casino tours in the Midwest. The matriarchal advantage did not prevent Herum from trailing Walt, who got the hill first and stayed there until her opponent caught up and tied the score at 3-all, only to have Walt take the final rack to win 4-3.
With Barnett waiting in the hot seat, Walt and teammate Lisa Berc faced off in the match for third place. Berc was forced to spot one game on the wire because of her slightly higher skill level and Walt closed out the game before it even reached hill-hill.
Barnett steadily took the lead in the final match as Walt slowly faded in the backstretch. After dominating the entire match, Barnett took her first tournament win with a 4-2 final decision. Results: 1st Julia Barnett $165 2nd Erin Walt $120 3rd Lisa Berc $75 4th Marissa Herum $45 5th Denise Osterholm, Deb Nielson $25 Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
