Gallery Diamante Carmel Celebrates the Launch of Web Site Dedicated to NY Expressionist Artist Arthur Robins’ Billiard Series

Poolpaintings.com launch Party and Exhibition Taking Place at the Sui Generis Showroom in New York Thursday September 23

Bettin_Large.jpgNew York, NY September 23, 2004 – Gallery Diamante, Carmel celebrates the launch of their new web site dedicated to New York artist Arthur Robins’ billiard series. In the summer of 2003, Robins’ work opened this new gallery and previous to his move to the West coast he had shown his work at the John McEnroe Gallery in Soho. Of special significance to the artist was the show “Cut in Wood” where he was the only living artist to show alongside Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, Lionel Feininger, Kandinsky, Franz Marc and Emil Nolde.  In 1993 Arthur Robins was one of the founding member of A.R.T.I.S.T., a group that successfully litigated a Federal landmark case extending the First Amendment right of free speech to artists and fine art – and recently in almost similar fashion, Robins made the front page of the New York Times June 12, 2004.

For this one night show, twenty-three original oils will be displayed; a cross section of Robins’ work which are often unorthodox depictions of landscapes, park scenes and cityscapes.  Four of the nine larger works displayed will be “pool pieces.”   one of these “Culture Club” 1993 which had been displayed at the John McEnroe Gallery and at the New World Art Center, is an exceptionally moody piece done in an unusually dark pallet for Robins. The focus seems to be on the figure in the foreground but upon closer study and reflection, it is more of a statement piece - the fact that it takes place in a pool hall is academic.

Big_Cue.jpgOf the smaller pieces there will be some works from the early 80’s, a cherished piece, Stuyvesant Park 1984, an important seminal work expounded upon in a series of park paintings; two of which will be displayed, “Rappin’ in the Park” 1999 and “Two Wild Oaks” 2000.  Other smaller piece include, “Video Arcade,” 1984, Journey of Love 2000, Chinese Girl 1984, “Decline of Culture” 1984, “Gamblin' on Broadway,” 1999 (18x24 inches) previously shown at Blinksfx Image HeadQuarters.

To round out the billiard paintings and cityscapes a biblical piece will also be displayed, “Day Of Atonement,” 2002 30x40 inches, which is beyond words, and a scene of American football “Giants” 1984, that had also been shown at the John McEnroe Gallery. Several Bizarre "HEADS" made from many thousands of pieces of wet and dry oil paint will also be displayed; described as friends and witnesses, by the artist.  In Robins’ work you can see the qualities of those artist he admires most; Chiam Soutine, George Roault, Edvard Munch – and on one level, since he has never compromised his work or himself, sacrificing on so many levels, he has inauspiciously broken new ground, continuing in struggle, the line where they begun.

"All of Robins' paintings convey gut feelings -- our innermost, most sincere and authentic feelings, often hard to grasp, however strongly felt, but in Robins’ paintings explosively self-evident." Donald Kuspit

“Robin’s depictions of pool players include an environment – the pool parlor and its denizens.  Often from overhead, he pictures the players in the act of shooting.  His knowledge of this game informs the player’s positions and ball formations.  The two – players and balls – are the most prominent elements in these depictions.  The distorted angles used by the artist are echoed in the angle of the pool players’ shots.  The geometry of the game as well as the players’ concentration are translated into a painting suggesting the intensity of a moment.”  Judy Collischan, PH.D Neuberger Museum, New York
