Grecar Scores Win; Campagna Takes QualifierBy InsidePOOL Staff It's not often that two players come out as winners in a 9-ball tournament, but it happened on March 12-13 when Gail Grecar earned the victory on the Jacoby Cues Great Lakes Tour. Renee Campagna came in second, but because Grecar has already acquired touring pro status, Camagna took home the WPBA qualifier.
Palace Billiards in Villa Park, IL, was the site of the two-day event that drew a healthy field of competitive ladies. Campagna also had another advantage, though-she works and plays at Palace Billiards-so she was out to defend her home turf. Both Grecar and Campagna made it to the hot seat match on Sunday, but both took different paths to get there. Grecar dominated her first two matches over Lana Tauscher and Tracy Cantrell, followed by a tough 7-5 win over Sunny Ulrich. Campagna, on the other hand, pulled out a7-5 win over Tina Carpenter in the first round, and then she bested Carey Jones before Rebecca Wagner put up a good fight in a losing cause. The hot seat match went down to the wire, reaching hill-hill, but Grecar came out on top 7-6. The semifinal match then became a mini-championship of its own in that the winner was going home with the qualifier spot. Campagna's opponent was Dawn Fox, who had come back through the one-loss side. After a hard-fought hill-hill match, Campagna came out on top with a 7-6 win. While Campagna had already secured the qualifier, she was still gearing up to capture the tour victory as well. After eight games, Campagna had a 5-3 lead, but Grecar came back with five straight wins to reach the hill. Campagna put one more win on the board, but Grecar closed it out to earn the victory 9-6. Results: 1st Gail Grecar $400 2nd Renee Campagna $275 + qualifier 3rd Dawn Fox $185 4th Julie Melman $100 5th Sunny Ulrich, Rebecca Wagner $50 Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the Jacoby Cues Great Lakes Tour.
