Joyner Wins 10-Ball Event at BCA League Nationals by InsidePOOL Magazine

Joyner Wins 10-Ball Event at BCA League Nationals

Cliff_Joyner_BCA_10_Ball.jpgNewly crowned U.S. Open one-Pocket Champion Cliff Joyner has doubled-down here at the Plaza Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, going two-for-two and defeating InsidePOOL’s Amateur Player of the Year, Scott Tollefson, to take first in the 10-ball tourney. Tollefson, who lost to Damian Alishan earlier in the event, exacted revenge in the semifinals when he dominated their rematch with a 7-2 win. Joyner, who won the hot seat by defeating Alishan, was obviously the favorite in the event, but Tollefson paid no mind and played a nearly flawless first set, forcing a second set with a 7-4 win, albeit starting with a fluke 1-10 carom and ending with an ace break. Both players took advantage of no-ins on the break and traded games until the score was knotted at 3-3, but then it was all Joyner. He made a great cut on the 1 ball down the rail and ran out to go up 4-3, then a break-scratch by Tollefson cost him the next game, and Joyner crushed the rack with perfect shape to go up 6-3. Tollefson had one more chance, but despite a power-packed break he came up dry, and Joyner clipped in the 1 and sent the cue ball into the 2-3-4 cluster, getting perfect position and running out the rack to win the match and the tournament.

The women’s team event, which also ended late Saturday, saw Chicago’s “Poultry Power” team take the top prize. With only seven teams signing up, the event was changed to a round-robin style format, and Chicago-based Poultry Power went undefeated with a 6-0 match and 60-34 win/loss record. Each player played in an alternating format, with the match decided by a race to 10. Rebecca Wagner, winner of the singles event, Laura Bendikas and Jacqui Herrera were unstoppable, and roared their way to the $1100 first prize. The Midway Bar&Grill Team, comprised of Carissa Biggs, Catherine Tran, and Ann Brandt came in second with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss. The “Sugar Mommas” from LA, California, took third place with a record of three and three.
