Kennedy Blows Away Competition at Pechauer Event Tommy "The Gun" Kennedy did it again, mowing down competitors at The Crooked Cue in Waynesville, NC, to take first place on the J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour. There was not an easy draw in any bracket for the 42 players who came out on July 24-25, 2004 to compete in the $1,000-added event. With such players as Earl Strickland, Tony Watson, Ron Park, and Bucky Fish coming out, every player had to pull out their "A" games if they hoped to make it into the money spots.
In one of the biggest surprises of the event, a 13-year-old powerhouse wanting to be known only as "Little Joe" eliminated former world champ Earl Strickland before the "Pearl" could cash. Kennedy sent Strickland to the one-loss side earlier in the tournament. "Little Joe" went on to play Mike Gulyassi in the match to determine fourth place. Gulyassi pulled away from his young opponent and won the match 9-6. Kennedy claimed the hot seat after scoring a 9-4 win over Scott Rabon, who then went to the west side of the chart to see if he could earn a rematch with Kennedy in the finals. Still hot from his last win, Gulyassi was waiting for an opponent in the semifinals. South Carolina player Rabon took a hard-earned 9-7 win over Gulyassi after the two waged close nail biter of a match. The final match was a bitter battle, with Rabon closing in on Kennedy 9-8 as he tried once more to defeat "The Gun." However, a Rabon mistake allowed Kennedy take the next two racks and to take first place with am 11-8 victory.
