King of the Hill by Steve Jennings The Fury Cues Carolina Amateur Tour blew into B.G. McGee’s in Greensboro, NC on April 24 and played host to 41 players while featuring some top-notch 9-ball pool. Robin Hill’s outstanding play in the competition left others in the dust as he walked away with his first tour victory of the season.
Early on, though, it was Eddie Little and his two consecutive tour wins that made him the odds-on favorite to capture the title. However, Little suffered a first-round defeat, and another loss later in the day ended his bid for another victory. Reigning tour champion Robert Ray played well, but Hill’s win in their semifinal match left him in third place. Dale Russell, a regular on the tour, worked his way to the final match with some hard-nosed play, besting five straight opponents. In the meantime, Hill cruised through his matches with Dallas Sims, Ian Hull, and Jeff Pruitt, compiling a 21-7 record before being bested by Don Lilly 7-4 to send him to the one-loss side. But Hill didn’t let that discourage him as he went on to defeat five tough opponents to earn a shot at Russell in the title match. Hill hoped to continue his winning streak as the final showdown with Russell began, and he quickly displayed why he was the best in this tournament. After Hill raced to a quick three-game lead, Russell countered to take a game but could do little else to curtail Hill’s tremendous momentum. Already in command of the match, a string of excellent shots propelled Hill to grab the next four games, which he eventually used to capture the victory 9-3.
