Landi Vaults Into First on Fury Florida Amateur 9-Ball Stop In a surprising string of wins against some of the Fury Florida Amateur 9-Ball Tour's veteran players,19-year-old Joey Landi of Springhill, FL, took first place on their August 22, 2004, stop. The one-day event drew a field of 69 players, 20 of whom were new members coming out to try to get a piece of the $500-added money. Following the Ladies Division event, the open players battled until only the undefeated Landi was left standing.
One of his first tests at Stroker's Billiards in Palm Harbor, FL, was against 2004 points leader Larry Walthall, where the young Landi came out on top of a hill-hill match with a 7-6 victory. While that match was going on, Robby Bradshaw of Palm Harbor, FL, and Robert Noon of Lakeland, FL, were engaged in their own hill-hill match. Securing his place for the hot seat, Noon sent Bradshaw to the west side with a score of 7-6.
After Bradshaw dispatched last event's winner, Nomar Paula, to fifth place with a 5-3 victory he met up with Walthall, who was coming off of a 5-2 win over Julio Aquino. The match ended with Walthall accepting fourth place, leaving Bradshaw waiting for his opponent from the hot seat match.
Things were going Landi's way in the match for hot seat. Showing how hot his game was, Landi shut out Noon with a 7-0 score, sending his opponent to the west side of the chart to face Bradshaw, an opponent Noon himself had sent to the "B" side in an earlier match.
Both Noon and Bradshaw played strong in the match to determine third place, but Noon proved how much he wanted a rematch with Landi by leaving Bradshaw in third place with a 5-3 victory.
Landi started the final race-to-9 match by jumping into the lead and holding it fast, all the while keeping his eye on Noon, who was right behind him. Both played some fantastic shots, allowing Landi a 5-3 lead before Noon caught up with him. After Noon closed the gap, they two traded innings, but when the score was hill-hill, a scratch by Noon announced to the crowd that Landi would take the first place spot when he took the win with a hard-earned 9-8 final decision.
