Louisiana Open Good to Schmidtby Bill Rosenberger In each of the past three years, the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour has stopped at Corner Pocket in Kenner, LA, for the Louisiana Open. And on March 12-13, John Schmidt made in three wins in a row with an undefeated victory.
It was clear from the get-go that Schmidt had winning on his agenda, as he breezed through the field of 37 players to reach the hot seat against Scotty Townsend. Right from the start, Schmidt was on his game, and he went on to win 9-6. In the one-loss side, tour director Tommy Kennedy was taking care of business, ousting Jamie Farrell 9-2 to reach the semifinals against Townsend. Both Townsend and Kennedy had their chances to run away with the match, but the only difference was the two or three opportunities that Kennedy was unable to cash in on. Townsend took a mile for every inch Kennedy gave him, and he went on to win 9-6. In the race-to-11 final match, both Schmidt and Townsend played resilient 9-ball. With the scored knotted up at 9 apiece, Townsend had a chance to reach the hill, but missed on the 5 ball, giving Schmidt the opportunity to run out. After he capitalized on the miss, Schmidt ran out final game to take home the victory 11-9.
