Make Mine a Double – Mosconi Pairings to Go Scotch

2004Logo_web.jpgFor the first time in the eleven year history of the Mosconi Cup, the doubles matches, for so long a critical aspect of the first three days of the tournament, will be played as ‘scotch doubles’.

Taking place on the opening Thursday evening and then on the Friday and Saturday afternoon sessions, the pairs matches have always been one of the highlights of the tournament as the captains try and get their duos just right.

In the past, the they have been played on an alternate visit basis, but this time around in Egmond, it will be alternate shots that determine the fate of nine crucial points.

In addition, all four players will be miked up for the benefit of the large TV audience who will hear every word as the Americans and Europeans discuss their options, often under severe pressure.

Taking place from the 16th – 19th December at the Hotel Zuiderduin, Egmond aan Zee, Holland the Mosconi Cup is the annual Europe v USA 9 Ball Pool Challenge.

Commented a Matchroom Sport spokesman, “In previous years under the old format, occasionally a player would participate in a doubles match and barely play a shot for the entire match due to the alternate visit system.

“This time around, all four players will be involved from start to finish and I believe it brings the team aspect as well as tactical decision making into sharp focus.

”The fans in the arena as well as the TV audience will certainly enjoy it more and I’m sure both sets of players will too.”
