Davis won the first few games but sat back in his chair for the next five racks as Massey pretty much dominated the table. However, because of a foul, Davis came up to the table and won the next four games to make the score 5-all. Games 13 and 14 were won by Massey, and the young player from Maryland won the next two games. During the sixteenth game, Massey and Davis traded shots on the 9 ball for about five minutes. Finally at one point, Massey was so exasperated that he looked up as if he was asking the pool gods, “Why won’t you let me sink this one little ball, please?” After Davis won the sixteenth game, he sat in the chair while Massey kept knocking the balls into the “small, tight pockets,” as he called them. Massey scored five more racks, giving him 13 games to Davis’s 8 and the trophy money for the event. He won $5,000, with Davis winning $2,800 for finishing second. Massey’s first words after he won were, “Thank you, Jesus.” He gave Scott Smith a high-five and walked over to speak with some fans. Five minutes later he performed a short trick shot exhibition for the audience. “I really wanted to win, and I had confidence,” said Massey. “This was a strong field … it feels good to win against this caliber of players—[Jose] Parica, Santos [Sambajon], [John] Schmidt, and [David] Hemmah.” The final feat of the Summer Jamboree was a ring game. John Schmidt, Jose Parica, Scott Frost, Santos Sambajon, Tony Chohan, and Geraldo Jamitos were put up by sponsors for $500 each to play for a $3,000 winner-take-all prize. Each player would advance or fall until he was out of money. Jamitos was out by the tenth game, and Parica left after the fourteenth game. Chohan fell out of the game by Game 20, and Sambajon was gone after Game 28. From there it became an all-in game where one player is betting all of his money that he will win. Schmidt won the last two games, sending Frost home with his previous events’ payouts while Schmidt left Hard Times Billiards a couple thousand dollars richer and much more confident.
