Matlock Nails First Place in Missouri Tori Hilty David Matlock cruised through the winners’ side, dominating his opponents to take first place on the Midwest 9-Ball Tour’s stop at Action Billiards in Hazelwood, MO. The $2,500-added event held on July 17-18, 2004, offered much excitement to players and spectators alike.
Andy Quinn, Matlock’s opponent in the finals, lost his second round to Bobby Anders 9-7, but persevered and won 10 in a row to get to the finals. on his way there, Quinn faced Tony Fargo in the quarterfinals. It was a nail-biter, with the players trading racks back and forth on the alternate-break format. Each player won their breaks, but ultimately it was Quinn who pulled to the lead, beating Fargo with 9-8. Over on the other side of the chart, Matlock and Anders were battling it out to see who would remain undefeated. Matlock dominated the match and took advantage of several missed balls by Anders to win the hot seat 9-4. This set up a rematch between Anders and Quinn for the match to determine third place. Quinn got out to a small lead, but widened the gap by not hesitating to take advantage of a couple of Anders’ dry breaks. Soon Quinn was claiming the victory with a 9-3 final decision. It looked like Quinn had the finals in the bag when he reached the hill first while Matlock was trailing at 5. Matlock took the next rack by kicking the ball in on a safe left by Quinn and brought the score to 8-6. Soon Matlock had the score tied 8-8, leaving the break in the final rack to his opponent. Quinn sunk the 1 and cue balls on the break, leaving a prefect 2-9 combo for Matlock. With ball in hand, Matlock easily made the shot and finished the match 9-8.
