Blatt Billiards Corporation Announce Citywide
Mayor’s Cup Pocket Billiards Championship

For The Benefit Of The After-School All-Stars of New York

 
New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth J. Podziba and the Blatt Billiards Corporation announced today that the 2003 Mayor’s Cup Pocket Billiards Championship will take place Sunday, December 7, 2003 for the benefit of the After-School All-Stars of New York.
The Mayor’s Cup Pocket Billiards Championship qualifying tournaments will be conducted in billiard rooms across the five boroughs through December 1, 2003. This citywide competition is open to men and women amateur players of all ages. To qualify for the Mayor’s Cup Championship, competitors must win a qualifying tournament at o­ne of the participating billiards rooms. Player entry fees will be donated to the After-School All-Stars of New York. Local winners will advance to the 2003 Mayor’s Cup Pocket Billiards Championship Finals, which will include a celebrity billiards fundraising event.

“I am pleased to announce the 2003 Mayor’s Cup Pocket Billiards Championship,” said Commissioner Podziba. “The competition will be intense as some of the City’s finest amateur players go head-to-head for the Cup as well as to raise funds for a most deserving charitable organization -- the After-School All-Stars of New York. I would like to thank the Blatt BIlliards Corporation for their o­ngoing committment toward helping the children of our city.”

Jerry Orbach, star of NBC’s “Law & Order”, and Brooklyn’s own billiards hall of famer Jean Balukas will host the Finals of the Mayor’s Cup Championship at the Amsterdam Billiards Club o­n East 86th Street for the benefit of the After-School All-Stars of New York.

 
The After-School All-Stars of New York is a non-profit organization whose national chairman is California Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger. The mission of the After-School All-Stars is to provide opportunities for inner-city youth to participate in sports, educational, cultural and community enrichment programs as well as to build confidence and self-esteem. Monies generated from the Mayor’s Cup entry fee donations will help raise needed funds and bring awareness to the After-School All-Stars of New York.

"This support will allow us to expand our mission to provide quality comprehensive after-school programs to middle school children in New York City during the critical hours of 3 to 6PM. It will also help promote the cause of after-school programming, which is so crucial to the safety and success of our school age children."
