Midwest Expo Begins!By Tom Martin The Second Annual Midwest Expo is underway at the plush 250-acre Pheasant Run golf resort in St. Charles, Illinois. The event kicked off Wednesday evening, with the open bank-pool and one-pocket events, boasting fields of 31 and 23, respectively. The race-to-3, single-elimination one-pocket event, played on regulation Diamond Smart Tables, is chock full of top-notch players such as former world champion Nick Varner, Cliff Joyner, Shannon Daulton, and Grady Mathews. U.S. Open champion Gabe Owen is also in the mix, playing his favorite game and hoping to further the size of his reputation and bankroll. The race-to-4 “bump” tournament on the bar tables is also ongoing, both events to continue through Friday. Thursday is the start of the open and women’s 9-ball events, a senior’s 9-ball tournament, and a midnight scotch doubles tourney. With almost 100 tables filling the 38,000 square foot convention space, the Midwest Expo also boasts APA handicap tourneys and mini’s galore, as well as a $5,000-added pro 9-ball event, for which Corey Deuel, recent Sudden Death 7-Ball victor, and “Rocket” Rodney Morris will also be on hand. Many of the fields are filling fast, and there is guaranteed to be 24-hour hardcore action as players from all over dash for the cash. Players and spectators are also the draw for the more than 50 vendors who are also here for the weekend. The Midwest Expo and events are scheduled to run through Sunday, October 11, 2004.
