Moody Rules His House and Dickert Captures Her First Win on the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour Andy Lincoln The Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour returned to the beautiful Great Slates in Cambridge, MD, for Stop #5 on May 8-9, 2004. Room owner John Moody, Sr., and the loyal tour sponsors made this a $2,500-added event. Several talented out-of-town players were among the 83 entrants in the open division, while 21 ladies celebrated Mother’s Day at the tables.Once again, the top 10 players on the points list were all in attendance. Between the strong newcomers and upsets, only Matt Krah, Keith McCready, and Pooky Rasmeloungon advanced to Sunday without a loss. Rasmeloungon sent the winner of the last two events, Ryan McCreesh, to the one-loss side, and Tony Ruberto scored a 7-6 decision over Mike Davis. Davis then escaped a fine match from young Trevor Dentz 7-6 to stay alive in the event. Play continued Sunday morning with Ruberto cruising through the top half of the bracket while Rasmeloungon defeated Jarrod Clowery 9-7 in the bottom half. The hot seat match was all Rasmeloungon as he won easily 9-2 over Ruberto. The elimination bracket was being dictated by a couple of fine runs by Mike Davis and Moody. Davis put together nine wins before matching up with Moody. The hard-working Moody recovered from his Saturday loss to Ruberto to notch wins over Ashley Cartwright, Richard Keefe, and Adam Stanton before sending McCreesh home. His run then continued with defeats over Andy Lincoln, Nick Prinsloo, and Clowery. Moody came out on the right side of a hill-hill battle with Davis, who had to settle for fourth place, and then Moody gained his revenge over Ruberto to advance to the final match. Moody closes down the pool room every night, and Sunday would be no exception. The first set went to Moody 9-7. The second set reached 8-7 in favor of Rasmeloungon when Moody received ball in hand with no open pocket for the 4 ball. A cue ball draw safety behind the 7 looked good until the 6 ball found the side pocket. After settling down, Moody fired the 4 ball kick into the same side pocket. A full table-length bank on the 7 led to an 8-8 thriller in the race to 9. Moody made 4 balls on the break, but a 2-9 combination was slightly blocked by the 6 ball. A couple of safeties later, Moody banked the 2 in the side with an extra rail and ran the table for his first tour win. First place paid $1,350, with $750 for second place. The Sunday-only women’s event got underway with 20 ladies looking to unseat the red-hot Malea Haacke, who cruised undefeated through the last two tour events. Steady tour performer Gwen Dickert did just that in the third round as she handed Haacke a 7-4 loss. Dickert continued on to the hot seat with a 7-3 win over Michelle Choe. Haacke began a run on the one-loss side, including placing Betty Roe into a personal best fourth place. A 5-4 decision over Choe gave Haacke another shot at Dickert. She would need to beat the confident Dickert twice and seemed on schedule when a 7-6 first-set decision went her way. Dickert was determined to win this event and grabbed the second set for her first Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour title. First place paid $400, with $265 for second place. Open Division Results: 1st John Moody, Sr. 2nd Pooky Rasmeloungon 3rd Tony Ruberto 4th Mike Davis 5th Jarrod Clowery, Jim McAdams 7th Keith McCready, Nick Prinsloo Women’s Division Results: 1st Gwen Dickert 2nd Malea Haacke 3rd Michelle Choe 4th Betty Roe There is no change at the top of the points list as Ryan McCreesh and Malea Haacke both maintain slim leads.
