Morris Blasts Field at Houston OpenBy Bill Fuller "Rocket" Rodney Morris went undefeated on November 6-7 to win the Houston Open. Morris didn't have an easy path to the victory though, as the field was full of big-name players who were still in Texas following the Corpus Christi Classic, including current U.S. Open champion Gabe Owen, 2003 U.S. Open champion Jeremy Jones, and current defending Houston Open champ Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant.
The event, held at Legends Billiards in League City, TX, is a major tournament on the TNT 9-Ball Tour, and the competitive field and large crowd only emphasized that fact. Despite the tough field, Morris streaked through the winners' bracket to face James Davis Sr. in the hot seat and took the match easily 9-4. Davis headed to the semifinals and waited for the winner of the quarterfinals between Bryant and Mike Alonzo. With the score tied at 2-all, Bryant pulled away to take a 5-2 lead, and finished of the match a few games later 7-3. The semifinal match was set between Davis and Bryant, and the crowd of almost 200 gathered to watch an exciting match-up. After Bryant jumped out early to a 2-0 lead, Davis battled back to get the match at 3-all, but Bryant took the next two games for a 5-3 lead. With the pressure on, Davis broke and ran the next rack, and from there, his confidence grew. He took the next three racks for a 7-5 win and a trip to the finals for a rematch with Morris. The finals played out in a similar fashion to their hot seat match, so much so that the final score was even the same. Morris took out Davis again 9-4 and captured his second straight Texas tournament.
