Nevel Runs the Racks on First Planet Pool Tour Appearance

By Bill Rosenberger

Larry_Nevel_Planet_Pool.jpgFormer World All-Around Champion Larry Nevel proved his worth at the Breaktime Sports Grill and Pub in Salisbury, MD, the weekend of September 18-19 on the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour.  Nevel went undefeated over the weekend, besting a strong field of 50 to end up in the finals with Bret Stottlemeyer on Sunday evening.

Tournament director Nick Prinsloo said that the tournament was a success, with the Breaktime Sports Grill and Pub adding $2,000 to the pot.  “We received great local support here in Salibury, and they’ve got one of the nicest pool rooms on the eastern shore.”

Nevel, who primarily plays on Midwest tours, added flavor to what was already a star-studded lineup of Northeast players.  Tour points leader Ryan McCreesh exited in an early second-round match against Nevel in what Prinsloo described as an “exciting match,” as Nevel ran eight racks in a row.  He also ran six consecutive racks against fifth-place finisher Lee Holt in a 9-0 match win.  Holt and Mark Ford tied for fifth place.

When it came to the semifinals, Stottlemeyer and Jim McAdams played a thrilling hill-hill match.  Being down 6-5, Stottlemeyer tied it up at six and then broke and ran the final rack, taking a 7-6 victory.  McAdams came into the semifinal match after having been ousted from the winners’ side by Nevel 9-1.

Nevel and Stottlemeyer were both playing hot going into the finals, each proving why they belonged in the finals.  But Nevel outlasted his worthy opponent and gained the three-game edge he needed for the 9-6 victory.

McCreesh still maintains the points lead, although past Reno Open champ Mike Davis, who finished tied for ninth over the weekend, gained on him somewhat.  Davis was another Nevel casualty during the tournament.
