By R.T. Mechling

The SML Entertainment's 9-Ball Championships, being held in Calgary, Alberta’s Olympic Oval, is in full swing after day one of competition.  The SML Entertainment sponsored event’s first day featured few surprises as many of the world’s top players advanced past their first-round opponents.

Alex Pagulayan narrowly defeated Mike Yancowski in a hill-hill thriller, while other winners included Corey Deuel, Earl Strickland, Paul Potier, Luc Salvas, and Johnny Archer.  The ladies also fared well in the event capturing two first-round victories by Grace Nakamura andJoanne Ashton.

The second-round, which begins at 2 p.m. local time today, features matches between Johnny Archer and Barry Hooey; Steve Cherewyk and Curtis Jansen; Paul Potier and Grace Nakamura; Luc Salvas and Sean Monkman; and Alex Pagulyan and Eldon Gauthier.  The marquee match of the day will highlight Corey Deuel against Canadian Danny Hewitt.

The five-day major event concludes on April 23 with over $35,000 in prize money being awarded to the tournaments top players.
