Owen Comes Through in 8-Ball By Bill Rosenberger Gabe Owen got back to his roots in the Twelfth Annual U.S. Bar Table Championship's 8-ball division, going undefeated in a field of 169 players. The event concluded Monday, March 7 at the Sands Regency Casino Hotel in Reno, NV, at around 2 a.m., with Owen shutting out Steve Cherewyk 5-0 in the second set of the finals.
Owen made his way to the final match by dominating the large field throughout the weekend. Cherewyk, though, made it interesting with his 5-2 first-set win, but he couldn't get anything going in the second. Owen's 5-0 triumph earned him $6,000, while Cherewyk took home $3,500. Stan Tourangeau and Glen Atwell rounded out the top four, while Corey Deuel and Paul Potier tied for fifth. Geoff Somer, a young shooter from Modesto, CA, played well enough to finish in seventh with David Gutierrez. But Somer's most impressive win was probably his last, as he ousted David Matlock from the tournament.
