Putnam and Petroni battled it out in the hot seat match, but “it all came down to the lag,” as Putnam put it. At hill-hill, Petroni played a great if rather unconventional out to win 10-9. The semifinals seesawed to 4 each before Putnam pulled ahead to an 8-5 lead. Jones put a couple more games under his belt, but it was Putnam who won 10-7 after Jones fouled on the 6 ball in the last rack. Petroni took an early two-game lead in the final match and kept it until Putnam knotted the score at 4. He then turned the tables on the Italian and created a lead of his own, moving up to 8-5. A missed 6 ball by “The Love Sponge” gave Petroni another rack, but an excellent long-rail kick shot on the 1 ball as a retort to a Petroni safety put Putnam on the hill. Petroni broke the last rack and came up dry, and when Putnam ran out to the 8 ball, he conceded the match, making Putnam the 10-6 victor.
