Reno 8-Ball Update

By Mark Whiteside

Dannymedinareno.jpg  After two rounds are just about completed, the tournament flow chart looks just about how you would expect it to. Pretty well all of the bigger name players are still on the no-loss side of the board, with one big exception. Danny Medina, winner of the December 2002 Reno Open held here at the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino, been defeated 5-1 by Jesse Bowman in the second round. Medina had trouble with his break, while Bowman played almost flawless pool. Maybe it was the extra practice that he received late last night matching up with Sandor Tot on an open table. There were quite a few spectators watching the awesome breaks and run-out capabilities of these two fine players. Bowman got the best of that confrontation, also.

Other top players advancing unscathed into the third round includes Nick Kruger; Chris McDonald; Tot; Bowman; Jeff Heath, who took second in the 9-ball on Saturday; Ike Runnels; Tinsley Johnson; and Frankie Hernandez. Two of the most interesting third-round contests will pit 9-ball winner Scott Tollefson against Tyler Edy, while Jose Parica will face Stan Tourangeau of Canada. Play will continue this evening until the 48 players that will reach the money are all that remain to compete tomorrow.
