Scott “The Freezer” Frost, who performed the impossible on Thursday evening by sending Johnny Archer to one-loss side courtesy of a 9-4 win, matched up with Maryland young gun Mike Davis. Frost had the lead through most of the match, and up 7-4, it looked as if nothing would stop him from continuing on in the winners’ bracket. However, a missed 7 ball when Frost was up 7-5 gave Davis the chance he needed to catch Frost, and with a two-pack, Davis defeated him 9-7. The only hill-hill match in this round was between Max Eberle and Troy Frank. Frank, who has been curiously absent from many of the pro events of late, came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie at 7 with Eberle. They traded games until both were on the hill, and then when Eberle scratched on his last break, Frank ran the table and won the match 9-8.
Defending champion John Schmidt whizzed past Arizona player Jimmy Mendoza, who was rarely seen at the table, by the score of 9-2. one-pocket pro Cliff Joyner sent Canadian Paul Potier to the one-loss side 9-4. San Diego player Louis Ulrich, who is currently running the San Diego 9-Ball Tour with his wife, Connie, was defeated by Jose Parica 9-7. Reigning U.S. Open champion Jeremy Jones sent Tony Annigoni packing 9-2. The winners’ bracket will see one more round on Friday night. Joyner will play Rivera, Parica will meet countryman Sambajon, Jones will play Davis, and Schmidt will match up with Frank. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
