Schmidt Rises to the Top in Louisiana Pechauer Event By Tori Hilty, InsidePOOL staff Facing a tough field of competitors, John Schmidt had to work for his first-place victory at the most recent stop of the J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour held at Corner Pocket in Kenner, LA. Among those on the board were Ron Park, Scotty Townsend, and Jim Walker, to name just a few.
Glenn Robin and Jamie Farrell own the room, which is a great players' place that sports 9-foot Brunswick tables that made it easy for them to put on this $1,000-added event on June 26-27, 2004. Clashing in the match to determine fourth place, Schmidt and tournament director Tommy Kennedy kept things neck-and-neck. Kennedy had a chance to tie the game at the hill, but stated he "shot when I should have played a safe" and missed. From there, Schmidt did not miss a ball and took the win 9-7. The winners' side finals saw room owner Jamie Farrell and Wade Crane face off to see who would land in the hot seat. The two traded racks in the beginning, but Farrell soon jumped out to the lead, leaving his opponent at 5. The last four racks went to Farrell, who slid into the hot seat with a 9-5 victory over Crane. Having control the entire match, Schmidt moved onto the finals after handily defeating Crane 9-4. The final match between Schmidt and Farrell was a near shut-out, with Farrell only getting one rack to his credit before Schmidt geared up and took rack after rack, arriving in the winner's circle with an 11-1 final decision. Results: 1st John Schmidt $800 2nd Jamie Farrell $555 3rd Wade Crane $425 4th Tommy Kennedy $350 5th Larry Labauue, Kevin Schelling $200 7th Frank White, Jody Smith $125 Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
