Slivka Triumphant at Pechauer Georgia Event Tori Hilty Pennsylvania player Jerry Slivka claimed first place at the J. Pechauer Custom Cues Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour as his own. Slivka battled back from the one-loss side after Bruce Berrong defeated him earlier in the tournament. The action unfolded at The Pool Room in Marietta, GA, July17-18, 2004.
A total of 52 players and countless onlookers from all areas turned out for the $1,000-added event. Room owner John Duong not only offered a dozen 9-foot Olhausen tables to players, but great support as well. Jim Mazzulla of ChristianPoolPlayers.com and professional tour player Ron Park were also on hand to help direct the tournament. The J. Pechauer Southeast Open Tour customarily gives money to a local charity at each stop, and this one was no different, with a local non-profit receiving $60. A monetary prize was also given to the highest lady finisher not in the money, and Betty Sessions and Susan Hall split the $50 that was awarded. As the highest junior finisher in the event, Jerry Bernhard received $50. The final four players began battling for the top money spots late on Day Two, with Tommy "The Gun" Kennedy taking on Rick Howard in the match to determine fourth place. Kennedy slid past Howard to make it into the semifinals, where he awaited the outcome of the hot seat match. Facing off as the final two on the winners' side were Bruce Berrong and Slivka. After a tense, back-and-forth match, Berrong and Slivka tied the score at the hill. Berrong mustered his skill and took the final rack and the hot seat with a 9-8 win over Slivka. It was off to the semifinals for Slivka, who arrived in fine form. Slivka got a lead on Kennedy and did not give it up. Reaching the match-winning score of 9, Slivka ended the match with his opponent trailing at 4. Coming up in a rematch against Berrong in the single, race-to-11 finals, Slivka did not give Berrong many chances at the table. Before all was said and done, Slivka was at the hill and five racks ahead of his opponent. As an answer to his earlier defeat by Barrong, Slivka took the next rack to finish the game with an 11-5 victory.
