Smith Earns Undefeated Victory on Viking TourBy InsidePOOL Staff The Viking Cue Open 9-Ball Tour always seems to draw some of the best players, and the February 19-20 stop at Rockford Billiard Café in Rockford, IL, was no exception. However, the 70-player field was truly dominated by Adam Smith, who wrapped up the win with an exciting run in the finals. Smith and Marco Marquez faced off in the hot seat match, and while Smith captured the win, it was the first time any opponent had won six games against him. In the one-loss side, Marquez faced a Gil Hernandez, who was doing a good job of staving off elimination. But Marquez showed how badly he wanted the rematch with Smith by ousting Hernandez. Smith and Marquez battled for the second time, but this time first-place was on the line, and Marquez was determined to give Smith his best effort. The two traded games back and forth until it was 4-all, but the tide seemed to turn in the ninth rack. After Smith came up dry on the break, Marquez ran out the rack, and followed up with three more to reach the hill at 8-4. In Game 13, Smith finally got back to the table, and he never looked back, running out the rest of the match to earn a well-deserved 9-8 victory.
