Soaking Up the Win

Putnam Remained Undefeated

Shawn_Putnam_Viking_04.jpgIn a meeting of great players, Shawn Putnam came out victorious at The Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour season kick-off.  The event, held on August 28-29, 2004, at Fiddlestix Café in Canton, OH, drew 42 players.  Even though most of the matches of the tournament came down to the wire, Putnam took first place undefeated.

Former U.S. Open one-Pocket champ Leil “JR” Gay met with Tony Chohan, who had traveled to the East Coast from Sacramento, CA, in the match to determine fourth place.  In a match that followed the example set throughout the event, the players traded racks back and forth until the very end, when Chohan managed to edge past Gay to win with a hard-earned hill-hill victory.

In the meantime, Putnam faced off against former Junior National Champion Don Wells for the hot seat.  Putnam pulled into the lead, allowing his opponent to get three on the board before he shot out to take the 9-3 win.

Waiting for an opponent, Chohan greeted Wells as they met in the semifinal match.  The two players were tied all the way, each determined to make it to the finals.  Wells’ desire for a rematch with Putnam must have fueled him just enough to take the final rack, and he headed to the final match with a 9-8 victory over Chohan.

The score in the final match was a near repeat of the score of Wells' and Putnam’s earlier match.  At the beginning, the match was tied for the first four games, but then Putnam broke loose, leaving Wells hitting safeties.  There was no looking back for Putnam, he took rack after rack to win the match and first place with a final 9-4 decision.  Be sure to come out for more Viking Cue Tour action as the new Viking Cue Amatuer 9-Ball Tour rolls into Ohio next weekend at  Northfield Billiards.
