South Padre Island Tournaments Kickoff WednesdayBy InsidePOOL Staff Two major events kick off this week at the South Padre Island Convention Center in Texas. The Winter Texan 8-Ball Championship, which starts on Wednesday, January 26, and the South Padre Island 9-Ball Championship, which begins on Friday, are expected to pack both the Island and the convention center.
The Winter Texan 8-Ball Championship is an amateur seniors' event (55+) open to men and women and teams with the entry fee at only $25. This is the first year for the ladies' event, and there will also be a team competition on Friday morning to conclude the two-day tournament. But the fun will only just be starting, as the South Padre Island Third Annual International 9-Ball Championships will get underway just hours later on Friday, January 28 with a $25 mini tournament starting at noon. The three-day event, which is BCA sanctioned, is open to amateurs of all ages and divisions, and with the $10,000-added money, the prize fund should be very impressive. The tournament will be directed by the Academy of Billiards. Amateurs wishing to enter the event need to call 1-800-SOPADRE for an entry form, or go to http://www.sopadre.com/pool_tournament.asp to download an entry form.
