Streaking Hernandez Claims Victory on Hampton Ridge Stop

By R.T. Mechling

HernandezHamptonRidge5-1.jpgFrankie Hernandez used a solid run through the one-loss side to earn a spot in the finals, where his momentum carried him on to take the tournament title as The Hampton Ridge 9-Ball Tour made its way to Rockaway, NJ.  The May 1 event was held at Rockaway Billiards and was the tour's sixth stop of the season.

Eddie Abraham and Bristol Bob lead the way through the winners' side of the bracket en route to a hot seat matchup.  The match proved to be a survival of the fittest as the two competitors fought back and forth to eventually get to hill-hill.  Bristol Bob's miss on the 4 ball, though, cost him the game and the match as Abraham ran out from there advancing to the finals.

After an early 7-5 loss to James Conn, Hernandez racked up six straight wins as he came into the semifinal meeting with Bob.  Hernandez jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, but soon found himself in a deadlock at 6-6.  As he was lining up a 2-9 combination shot, Bob's concentration was apparently broken at this crucial point in the match, and he missed the shot, leaving a wide-open table for Hernandez.  Seizing this opportunity, Hernandez closed out the match 7-6 to advance to the finals.

Abraham took a quick 2-0 lead in the finals, but Hernandez came right back to tie things up at 2-2.  Battling back and forth, the two shooters were deadlocked at 4-4 when Hernandez caught fire by winning the next four games, putting himself on the hill and in position to claim the victory.  That solid lead proved to be too much for Bob to overcome, and Hernandez went on to take the title 9-5.
