The second set was discouraging for the Putnam fans in the audience. Although he hung in there at first with Strickland, coming within a game of tying when the score was 5-4, his play seemed off and the balls didn’t seem to do what he expected them to. Strickland down the next three games to make it 8-4 before Putnam got another chance – with a foul by his opponent, Putnam ran out that rack and won the following as well. But that would be his last, for Strickland proved too strong, and “The Pearl” won the last three games in a row to win the second set and the title 11-6.
