Two in a Row for Schjodt

FuryFLL_8_22_Schjodt.jpgDebbie Schjodt came out on top of the fray that was unleashed on Stroker's Billiards in Palm Harbor, FL, by The Fury Florida Ladies Amateur 9-Ball Tour on Saturday August 21, 2004.   The newest addition to the team of Fury tournament directors, Karen Alford, stepped up to the plate and proved herself a great asset as she smoothly maneuvered the 18-player field that came out for the one-day, $300-added event.

Jennifer Nelson and Jennifer Prost met up in the third round of the winners' bracket where Nelson took the lead and sent Prost to the one-loss side with a 7-4 win.  After falling to Schjodt, Ellen Van Buren showed Prost she was there to play, putting her out of the tournament and into fifth place with a 5-3 score.

Nelson and Schjodt were working their way through the winners' bracket to come face to face for the hot seat match.  Schjodt, winner of the last event, headed for the west side of the chart as Nelson took control and landed in the finals with a 7-3 victory.

This was Van Buren's first event with the Fury Florida Ladies Tour, and she was determined to make sure she left her mark.  Working her way through the brackets, Van Buren racked up wins on the one-loss side against Stephanie Mitchell, Nikki Rasmussen, Prost, and Barnes with scores of 5-2, 5-4, 5-3, and 5-1, respectively.  The biggest match came when she came face-to-face Schjodt, who had put her on the one-loss side earlier.  Schjodt showed that she was still in stroke and left Van Buren in third place.

Earning a chance to again match up against Nelson, Schjodt would face the opponent who had previously sent her to the one-loss side. The race-to-9 finals appeared to mirror their first match, with Nelson taking a 6-3 lead. The play was intense as Schjodt got two games to Nelson's one, but that still left Schjodt trailing Nelson 7-5.  The grueling match continued as Schjodt fought back to knot the score at the hill. A scratch on the break left Schjodt relinquishing the table to Nelson, who played until a miss on the 3 ball allowed her opponent back to the table. Giving Nelson hope of getting back in the game for the win, Schjodt missed on the 8.  Nelson missed a hard shot on the 8, dashing any hopes of getting her first tournament win this season and allowing Schodt to take over for the nail-biting 9-8 win.
