Two Straight for Berrong on Viking TourBy Bill Rosenberger The Viking Cue Open 9-Ball Tour stopped at Murphy's Brass Rail in Athens, GA, for a weekend stop on January 22-23. For the second straight week, Bruce Berrong not only won, but did it the hard way-coming back from the left side. Early on, Berrong wasn't getting much of the attention, especially after his defeat to Billy Tyler, who also knocked out former InsidePOOL Magazine Player of the Month B.J. Ussery. In the other half of the winners' bracket, Jim Jennings was merely surviving by the skin of his teeth. Down 6-1 to Dana Aft in their second-round meeting, he bounced back to win six straight racks to earn the victory 7-6. He and Tyler both advanced to the hot seat match, with Jennings taking the win for the first spot in the finals. Tyler and Berrong matched up in the semifinals, and the rematch was quite different for both players. Tyler couldn't gain any momentum, while Berrong almost completely dominated the match, winning 7-3 and getting a shot at his second straight tour victory. For the second week in a row, Berrong found himself needing a two-set sweep to capture the Viking win, and Jennings wasn't going to let him take it so easily. In the first set, either player could have pounced on the victory, but Berrong edged out the win 7-5. In the second set, Berrong just carried the momentum and took the match 7-4.
