UPA Championship Fights Storm

By David Thomson, Medium Pool

Deuel_Corey_Bike.jpgThe crowds fight rain drenched freeways as a winter storm thrashes in its third day. Where’s the Southern California sunshine? It‘s on the faces players who are still alive in this race-to-11, alternate break event. All have a shot at the bright lights of ESPN as it captures the action on Sunday for worldwide broadcast.

Efren Reyes recovered from a 7-4 deficit against Canadian champion Paul Potier to win 11–7. Reyes was suddenly in contention, and he never looked back.

All week, Mika Immonen was a ball-pocketing maniac, as was Corey Deuel. In three matches, neither had amassed much more than ten games against themselves. Then they ran into each other, and Deuel dominated that match.

Gabe Owen, Mike Davis, and Danny Basavich are looking stronger than ever as they beat paths through the winners' bracket. Johnny Archer and Francisco Bustamante are on the one-loss side after suffering losses to Reyes and Basavich, respectively. Ralf Souquet is there, too, as is Sambajon, Frank, and Luat.
