Varner topped Luis Viera, David Grossman, and David Broxson in succession by 9-8 scores after his only loss. Hall handed the surprising Broxson his first defeat after the Savannah, GA, resident by way of the Walton Beach, FL, area had marched through successive wins over Tommy Kennedy, Rodney Morris, Danny Harriman, and his close friend Benny Conway, Jr. The 9-4 decision from Hall didn't discourage the unsung Broxson. However, in his next match with Varner, Broxson hung the 7-ball in the case game to let his opponent off the hook, going home with third place.
The final was a classic between two masters of the percentages. Varner's iron will to maintain defensive advantages helped him fight to a 7-5 lead, but Hall capitalized on Varner pocketing a ball accidentally while playing safe to close the gap to one. Hall ran the next three racks to take a 9-7 lead, but he didn't move ahead after his tenth. Varner showed offensive genius with a breakout of a cluster in one rack and then a delicate maneuvering of the balls in a tie-up as they lay. When he broke and ran the last rack to win 13-10, a classic match lay behind them.
