Walker Edges Out Sing for First '05 Win by InsidePOOL Magazine

Walker Edges Out Sing for First '05 Win

By Bill Rosenberger

The New England Invitational "B" Series Tour kicked off its 2005 season on January 9 at Mickey's Billiards in Holbrook, MA.  The relatively new Northeast tour drew 29 players, including Walter Bryska and Chris Leal, who both snagged two wins last year.

But the day belonged to Scott Walker and J.B. Sing, as they both emerged undefeated to reach the hot seat match.  The two competitors battled it out, with Walker edging out the 7-6 win.  Sing then ousted Mike Alfonso 7-4 to earn a spot in the finals.

The final contest was a race-to-11 rematch between Walker and Sing, and it was close the entire time.  Both players displayed great shot-making ability and tenacious defense, but neither could pull away.  With the score tied at 7, Walker misfired on the 6 ball, leaving Sing to run out, followed by a break-and-run for a two-game lead.  In Game 17, Sing played a safe on the 2 ball, but Walker was able to kick out the 2 and run the table.  In the ensuing rack, Walker broke and left himself a tough 1-9 combo, which he made to tie the match up at 9-all.

Walker edged out another rack to get on the hill, but a miss on the 7 ball opened the door for Sing to get back into the match.  With the match at hill-hill, the momentum was in Sing's corner.  He broke and ran up to the 5 ball, but his leave was bad.  After a Walker miss on the 6, Sing got another chance to grab the victory but left the 6 hung near the pocket.  once Walker got back to the table, he didn't relinquish hit, running out to get the 11-10 win.

Results:

1st Scott Walker $550

2nd J.B. Sing $275

3rd Mike Alfonso $150

4th John Joseph $120

5th Paul Rota, Rich Sena $50
