Walthall Stays No. 1 in Points With Comeback Win by InsidePOOL Magazine

Walthall Stays No. 1 in Points With Comeback Win

By Bill Rosenberger

Larry Walthall proved yet again why he is the points leader on the Fury Florida Amateur 9-Ball Tour when he ousted Tony Vicari in the final match on Sunday, September 19, at Pro Billiards in Orlando, FL.

Tournament director Kay Higgins said the field of 56 players was very strong and included ladies' semi-pro Miyuki Sakai, who finished tied for seventh.  The other ladies' player was Jessica Barnes, who is fourth in points on the Fury Florida Ladies Amateur 9-Ball Tour.  She drew the tough Adam Wheeler, who is also her boyfriend, and he sent her to the one-loss side where she was ultimately eliminated.

Sunday's matches were even more exciting and competitive, as Walthall fell 7-4 to Richard Murray early in the day, sending him to the left side of the chart.  Murray was stead fast in the winner's bracket until he faced Vicari in the hot seat match.  It was there that the wheels seemed to come off, as he faltered 7-1.

Meanwhile, Walthall put together four straight wins to set up the rematch with Murray-this time in the semifinals.  The outcome was much different this time, as Murray never seemed to regain his confidence, and Walthall took advantage by ousting him 5-1.

The final match between Vicari and Walthall set up to be back and forth, but it didn't play out that way.  Walthall jumped out to a 5-0 lead.  Vicari got back in it with a couple of racks, but Walthall took off at the end, winning 9-5.

Higgins described the weekend gala as very successful, especially because of the quality of players. "Any time you can get such a variety of strong players, the tournament will be a success," she said.  "Each week, you never know who is going to be the best player out there."
