West Coast Win for Eberle by InsidePOOL Magazine

West Coast Win for Eberle

By InsidePOOL Staff

Max--Eberle.jpgA huge field of 95 players showed up at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA, on January 1-2 to compete in the J. Pechauer West Coast Tour.  The field was especially large and tough because of the UPA Tour's season finale held January 5-9 in nearby Bell Gardens.

Top competitors such as Jose Parica, Santos Sambajon Jr., Max Eberle, and Ismael "Morro" Paez all took advantage of the event, giving fans and players alike some hotly contested matches.  As always, they saved the best for last, as Eberle and Dave "The Wave" Hemmah emerged undefeated going into the hot seat match.

Both Eberle and Hemmah had impressive victories throughout the tournament with Eberle advancing with wins over Tang Hoa and Corey Harper, while Hemmah bested Ernesto Dominguez and Glenn Atwell.  But only one could advance to the finals undefeated, and Eberle took the 9-5 win to do so.

Hemmah, though, wasn't going to pack it in.  In the semifinals, he faced Arizona's Jimmy Mendoza, who had dropped his opening match but battled back through the one-loss side with 10 straight wins, including dominating performaces over Parica and Canadian champPaul Potier.  But Hemmah was just too strong, wiping out Mendoza with a quick 7-0 win.

In the finals, Hemmah and Eberle looked to be evenly matched, and the race to 13 would certainly be tight.  Hemmah was also trying to avenge his earlier to defeat to Eberle, which would give him a sweet comeback win.  But Eberle started the match on fire, streaking to a 6-1 lead.  Hemmah bounced right back with six straight wins to take a one-game lead, but Eberle wasn't done either.  He notched seven wins in the last eight racks to win the tournament 13-8.

Results:

1st Max Eberle $1,000

2nd Dave Hemmah $750

3rd Jimmy Mendoza $550

4th Paul Potier $400

5th Elias Valles, Glenn Atwell $275

7th Gerardo Jamito, Morro Paez $180

9th Don McClelland, Wayne Pullen, Damian Alishan, Jon Henson $120
